How to Detect - and Fix - a Leak in Your Shower Enclosure

One of the most common bathroom leaks, a leaking shower enclosure can cause major damage, from loose, curling and rotting flooring to peeling paint, water stains, mold and more. If you think you’ve got a leak on your hands, follow these steps to find out where the water’s getting out:

  1. Check for gaps in the rubber gaskets.
  2. Check for gaps in the caulk between your shower enclosure and bathroom floor.
  3. From the inside, splash water all around and over the shower door and frame. Check the outside of the shower enclosure for leaking water. Be patient - leaks can take over 5 minutes to show up.

Not that you’ve found the leak, here’s how to fix it:

  1. Close your shower door correctly. Improper closure can lead to leaking.
  2. Replace rubber gaskets.
  3. To seal a leaking shower frame, run a small amount of caulk around the inside, paying careful attention to any gaps. Wipe away the excess and allow to dry.
  4. To fix gaps between the shower enclosure and the floor, scrape out the old caulk and add new. Allow to dry.
