3 Ways to Prevent Blocked Drains

by Chelsea Oliver 24th February 2017

It’s something we all experience...you go to clean up a few dishes after a great meal and, without warning, the sink isn’t draining. Or you’re taking a nice, hot shower when, suddenly, it turns into a bath. Blocked drains can strike without warning, but thankfully there are ways to prevent them! Read on to find out more.

Install a Plug Screen

A plug screen is a simple way to prevent debris from entering your drain. Ideal for bathroom and kitchen sinks, as well as tubs and showers, the correct size is required (a range are available). Installation prevents food waste, hair, soap and more from getting into the drain.

Avoid Oil and Grease

Plumbing systems are not designed to handle oil and grease, which harden inside pipes, creating blockages. To prevent these scenarios, which we bet are very familiar to emergency plumbers, always properly dispose of these substances - never wash them down the drain! If you’re curious about liquids like milk and juice, those are just fine.

Monitor Debris

Whether it’s a tub or a kitchen sink, one of the easiest ways to prevent clogs is to monitor what goes down. For kitchens, scrape plates thoroughly before rinsing or washing and use cleaning products designed to break down grease. In the bathroom, keep items like hair grips, face wipes and makeup brushes in a safe place, as these quickly attract hair and other materials.

When it comes to keeping your drains clear, installing a plug screen - and monitoring what goes down - is essential. However, if you do find yourself with a blockage, we’ve got you covered.
