3 Ways to Fix Blocked Drains

by Chelsea Oliver 24th February 2017

One of the most common home plumbing problems, a blocked drain can really put a damper on your day. Often caused by food waste, oil, hair and miscellaneous objects such as small parts of toys, blockages are difficult to prevent even if you follow your plumber’s advice. Read on to discover three different ways to fix blocked drains, DIY-style.

A Plunger

Useful in a myriad of situations, a plunger should be your first line of defense when faced with a blocked drain. To fix a blockage, fill the sink with several inches of water and set the plunger over the drain and plunge up and down, using vigorous motion. For double sinks, don’t forget to seal the second drain and and always keep towels handy in case of mess.

Baking Soda, Salt and Vinegar

This powerful combo is often used with great success! For sinks, tubs and showers, simply pour ½ cup each of baking soda and salt into the drain. Next, add a ½ cup of white vinegar and allow it to work its foamy magic before adding a couple of quarts of boiling water. Eco-friendly and inexpensive, it’s best to do this in the evening in order to let the concoction sit overnight.

Utilize Drain Unblocker

A high quality drain unblocker can make a world of difference. Smaller clogs often become larger over time and, similarly to baking soda, salt and vinegar, a drain unblocker works to loosen and rinse away the built-up gunk. Best used on a regular basis, these products are thorough, effective and designed to be safe for pipes. Always follow the instructions on the bottle.
